Kids Acoustic Guitar – Six Things to Know Before you Purchase
Learning to play an instrument is an experience that every child should have. An acoustic guitar is a great place to start. It is important to balance cost against selecting a reasonably good guitar as their first Starter Acoustic Guitar Guitar so that their first experience in playing is an enjoyable one. A good guitar is a pleasure to play and will encourage them to continue practising.
String Choice
In choosing an acoustic guitar your first decision is the type of strings: your choice is either nylon strings used on classical guitars or steel strings which are very popular worldwide. Nylon strings are softer on the fingers and it doesn’t take long to become accustomed to the feel; steel strings, on the other hand, will take some getting used to but you will develop the calluses on the tips of the fingers and the right muscles after playing consistently for more than couple of weeks.
Size
This may be an obvious statement but it is the most important consideration. You need to be comfortable with the guitar in hand. I always try before I buy; I like to try the guitar out for fit, for the quality of the sound and for whether it looks and feels good in my hands. The size of the guitar will depend on the age of your child; you may go for a half-size (5-8 year old) or even a three-quarter size guitar (9 -12 year old). But you need to get a feel for the guitar so go into the nearest store and try one for size and quality.
Sound Quality
If the quality of the sound of the instrument is sweet to the ear you will want to play more often. Quality of sound and feel of the guitar are important considerations when you are purchasing your first starter Kid’s Acoustic Guitar. Sit down and play the guitar to get a feel for the fretboard and to test the action (how hard is it to press the strings to the fretboard). Is the fretboard too big?
Playing will give you an appreciation for the sound quality of the guitar. While you are playing, ask yourself whether the guitar feels good in your hands? I don’t worry so much about top brands; I focus more on sound quality, the feel of the guitar in my hands and what it looks like. Get a good quality guitar that fits within your budget; you need to balance cost against quality.
Accessories
You want your first guitar to last for awhile so purchase a guitar stand, a case, a strap and a tuner for your kid’s acoustic guitar. Use the guitar stand when you are not playing, the case when you travel, and the strap if you need to stand and play. The tuner is a must for a beginner as it will take some time before you will be able to tune the guitar with your ear. It is really difficult to learn guitar when it is out of tune.
Cost
Costs vary a great deal but you can expect to pay at up to $100 for a reasonable starter acoustic guitar. You need a good reason to pay more a $100. If your child is starting out and this is their first guitar, don’t splash out until they get more proficient and want to continue. Then you might consider purchasing a more expensive guitar.
Easy lessons
You do not have to pay for basic lessons. Jump online and track down some video tutorials to get the basics. You need to learn the parts of the guitar, how to tune a guitar, basic chords structure, how to strum and how to shift from chord to chord. With three simple major chords you will be able to play some very well-known popular songs and you can find all this online if you look around.
If you want to accelerate your skill-level then you need to consider a tutor. A good tutor will speed up the learning process, help you develop good technique and you can focus on learning a specific style of guitar music including rock, country and acoustic blues guitar. Enjoy your instrument and learn songs you like.
