Acoustic Guitar Setup String
Acoustic guitar string tension?
Hi
Got a yamaha apx500 acoustic a few months back, and Im changing the strings today.
It’s a great guitar, great tone and everything… the only problem is, unlike on my electric guitars where its so easy to get a good clean sound from all 6 strings when doing a barre chord, Im having to press REALLY hard on my acousitc to get the same effect.. and Ive been playing 13 years! This cant be right…
Is there any way, without taking it for a full setup, I can get a looser tension, but keeping the tone? I dont know what strings were on originally, but Im about to put some d’addario EJ10s on.

I have had the same problem for years. I took my guitar to the Guitar Center in Nashville. I explained them the problem, so the tech repaired it. He told me that he filed the bridge for lower action. He used the lowest guage, but he told me that the unwound strings are plain steel that’s basically the same as electrics. He put slinky 09 on the low and what ever he did with the B and G strings. It plays perfect.
