Gator Acoustic Guitar Case
What is the best guitar flight case for the money?
I’m getting ready to deploy to an Army base in Iraq for 12 mos. and would like to take my Seagull acoustic guitar along. I’m going to have it shipped there by US Postal Svc. If the guitar and I return from Iraq in serviceable condition, I expect I’ll be traveling & moving with the guitar a couple times a year for years to come. I’ve looked at web sites for Calton Cases, CaseXtreme (the “Clam”), Karura, Seagull (the “Tric”), Gator and ProStage. The Clam case is under $300 and the Tric is only $100, whereas a Calton will run around $1000. I’m not a professional musician & my guitar retails for only $400 – $500, but it is a great instrument for its class and I like it. I’ve never shipped or flown with a guitar before, so I don’t know what to expect. What case should I buy?
I have met several touring professionals and they all use Calton cases. Absolutely nothing compares to them but as you pointed out they’re expensive. Elderly (see link) has a Calton dreadnought case for $875, which is a little better. I’d admit that it does seem a little crazy to spend more on the case than you did for the guitar.
When music stores ship guitars they put them in a hard case, then put that hard case in a sturdy cardboard box with plenty of packing material. I do not know, however, if the US Postal Service will accept a box that large. I know that FedEx and UPS do.
You should loosen the strings a little and make sure the guitar is well supported inside that case. Make sure you fully support the head with balled-up socks or something else to keep it from bouncing around.
I wish you a safe return. My thoughts and best wishes are with you.
