Acoustic Guitar Computer Tuner

acoustic guitar computer tuner
What else do I need to buy with my first acoustic guitar?

I recently bought a simon and patrick songsmith folk and was wondering what else i needed to buy in order to properly maintain it as well as play. i already have a bunch of picks, and am planning to get a tuner or just stick with the one i have on my computer. is there anything else i need to know/need? how often should i change strings? are lighter gauges better if i’m more concerned with playing softer music/mellower music on my guitar? should i get my strings replaced by my local guitar store or can i do it myself? what kind of cleaning supplies would i need and how often do i need to do it? it has a Semi Gloss Varnish Burst Finish.
I am just starting to learn, but I have purchased a dvd learning course (since i don’t really have time or money for full out guitar lessons)

As with anything you purchase and intend to maintain, you must have expenses in doing so.

1. If your computer tuner works then keep using it. Otherwise, buy a tuner to keep in the case in the event you travel to play.

2. Medium gauge strings produce the best tonal delivery. Many guitarists use light gauged strings for bending and to allay sore fingertips. Try a set of light and then medium gauges to see which suits you best.

3. Buy your strings at a local music store. Most reputable stores will install the strings at no charge. Ask if you can watch so you can learn how to do the task.

4. While at the music store, buy a bottle of guitar polish and some soft cloths. Fender, Gibson, and Martin put out quality polishes. Ordinarily, a soft, warmly moist cloth is best to wipe away smudges from your guitar, following up with a dry, clean cloth.

5. If your fretboard is rosewood ask the guitar technician what you should do to keep it in shape. This calls for quality fretboard oil and OOOO steel wool.

Congratulations on your new purchase! I wish you success in learning the joys of guitar playing. If you aren’t considering professional lessons, get a copy of Hal Leonard’s Beginning Guitar Method Book One. Inside are instructions in tuning, care, basic chords, and basic music theory with exercises. It’s a great book for the beginner!
