What’s the best guitar for a good intermediate guitar player?
I’m 21 years old and I’m in my twelfth year of playing. I own a Samick (first guitar, now my brothers to learn on) a Dean Vendetta, which I’m going to custom paint for my band, a Squier P-Bass Special, a Guild acoustic, and my personal baby, a Fender Telecaster Custom with Spalted Maple Top. I play lead guitar for a band, and although I love my Telecaster, I would love to play with a second gutiar for our drop D songs. We play mainly Alternative rock with a little progressive (Inspiration comes from Muse, U2, Coldplay, etc…)
I play with distortion a lot, as well as clean, and I’ve been looking at other guitars that would be a good investment. I’ve been leaning towards buying a Gibson Les Paul Studio, but I wanted to know if anyone has some recommendations for my playing style on a good guitar to look at. My price range is $750-$1,100. I’ve also looked in to some PRS and Schecter, so I’d love some extra input! I play on a Fender FM212R amp.
It depends on what you’re looking for, playability, look, reliability…
I own a Gibson Les Paul Signature, it is great visually, plays well, and is pretty reliable, it’s nothing to special in any of the departments, but a great guitar. Also, Gretsch and Rickenbacker are great choices, visually stunning, and very nice, but also, very pricey. The Gretsch Chet Atkins and Country Gentleman are two of the nicest guitars ever made, but very expensive. A little out of your price range would be the Gretsch 6120. But if you’re using a lot of distortion, and alt. rock prog. then i would suggest a Fender, the most playable guitar on the planet. And if you’re a fan of your Telecaster, then I would suggest the Fender Jazzmaster, an incredibly fun guitar to play, not just meant for jazz of course. It is one of Fender’s top end guitars, and maybe a little out of your price range. If so then I’d go with the Stratocaster, which I prefer over the Telecaster. If none of these work for you, then you’d have to go with the Paul Reed Smith, a great all around guitar and very reliable. The PRS is a little expensive, but beautiful, and sounds great. My other suggestion would be (if you’re interested in a hollow body) a Gibson ES of some kind. The newest ES is the ES-339, very nice. Other suggestions would be a Gibson SG, Washburn Washington or a great guitar in your price range would be Ibanez, you should look into them, not as nice as the others, but a good reliable guitar. And if you want an acoustic I would suggest a Fender, or a higher end Seagull, which are a relatively inexpensive guitar. If you’re looking for something a little more exotic, you should definitely get a Gibson Faded Flying V, at about 950 dollars, or a Resontor, or a twelve String. Hope I helped.

Ten $4.31 Part of the ’90s Seattle grunge triumvirate completed by Nirvana and Soundgarden, Pearl Jam debuted with Ten, their most accessible, least self-conscious album. Over time, PJ’s rep as a politically correct band just a little too above it all to prostitute its music on MTV has nearly superseded the music. But before that, they were a simply an in-your-face, in-your-head, loud, melodic rock band. An… |

Unplugged $4.71 Clapton caught the “unplugged” trend just at the right time, when the public was hungry to hear how well rock stars and their material can hold up when stripped of elaborate production values. Clapton himself seemed baffled by the phenomenon, especially when picking up the armload of Grammys Unplugged earned him, including Record and Song of the Year for “Tears in Heaven,” the heart-rending elegy … |

Acoustic Soul $7.74 India Arie’s Acoustic Soul is just as advertised: grooving soul music with an acoustic bent. Arie herself plays guitar, supplemented by strings (instead of synthesizers) and drums (instead of drum machines). The first single, “Video,” is a calm, confident ode to self-love, comparing the dreadlocked, petite Arie to the average girl in a video. Arie is indeed anything but average: her debut mar… |
